WikiProjectMed: Platform Instructions (Swahili)

WikiProjectMed/TWB

Instructions for linguists

This is a joint project with Wiki Project Med Foundation to make clear, reliable, comprehensive, up-to-date education resources and information in the biomedical and related social sciences freely available to all people in the language of their choice, online and off. Read more.

In this project, we will be working directly on the WikiProjectMed platform. For this reason, we have created this explanatory document with all the information you will need as well as screenshots to guide you.

Translating on the platform

To start working on the translation, click on the English and Swahili article links separately and open them in two different windows. In this new workflow, you do NOT need to log in to the platform to edit the text. Use the “split screen” function in order to be able to easily have the English source on one side of your screen and the Swahili on the other side. If you need tips, please read this article or watch this video. Indeed, here, you will be working directly in the article.

On the Swahili article page, click on “Hariri” to edit, or simply press Alt + Shift + V on your keyboard:

Scope of Work

You will notice that what is in scope is not the whole article; only the Summary is needed. You will see that the article to be translated is divided into four sections:

1. The Summary Table (Infobox)
There are two different ways to translate the infobox section:

  • Double-click on the infobox section,
  • Or, click once on the section and then click “Edit.”

*Only the editable text should be translated. Any text that remains in English and cannot be edited is out of scope.

Once you have double-clicked on the table, you’ll be taken to another page with fields to fill in:

Only edit the text that has been automatically propagated—there’s no need to fill in other fields. Once you’re done, scroll back up and click on “Fanya mabadiliko.”

2. The Summary/Extract of the article

At this point, you can start Post Editing the article and make the necessary changes to the translation. In order to guide you in what is expected of a Post Editing, please read these instructions. Please make sure that the translation matches the source in terms of meaning, but also in terms of formatting (bolding, italics, notes).

3. The References

Please double-check that all the references in the target match those in the source reference section. If any are missing, go back to the corresponding paragraph and amend the hyperlink or endnote. The formatting is important here.

To edit the reference list, click on the reference that needs adjustment, and once you’ve finished, click on “Fanya mabadiliko.”

4. Publishing the article

After completing the translation or revision, take a second look at the text to ensure nothing is missing, then click on “Publish” (it can be displayed in your language too) or press Alt + Shift + S:

Resources

As in this project we are not working on Phrase, our standard CAT Tool, you won’t have access to some of its resources like Translation Memories (TMs) or Term Bases (TBs). However, we have created an offline TB that the Project Officer will share with you for reference. According to your target language we may also share a Language Style guide.
