Afrikaans is a West Germanic language spoken mainly in South Africa and Namibia . It has Arabic and Latin alphabets , and is influenced by Dutch , Bantu , Khoisan , Portuguese , and Malay languages . The language evolved from 17th-century Dutch and is sometimes called Netherlandic . It developed through a gradual divergence from European Dutch dialects during the 18th century, shaped by the descendants of European colonists, indigenous Khoisan peoples, and African and Asian slaves in the Dutch colony at the Cape of Good Hope
