i am learning a lot of new stuff by helping you guys with your projects so i am feeling very welcome and warm in this comunity so if you dont mind i have an honest question :
WHAT ARE THE OPTIONS AND POSSIBILITIES TO START WITH WORKING PROJECTS FOR PEOPLE HAVING DIFFERENT EDUCATIONAL BACKGROUNDS??
( FOR EXAMPLE :
a person with lots of hands on experience in translation and with educational background consisting of many short translation courses and c2 examinations ( e.x TOELF , HSK , ,ZDfB , DELE etc) can start a career in translation? or it is mandatory a 4/5 year degree to start working with paid projects?
i see freelance translators with different educational background working already and i see agencies demanding academical background and i see other agencies just demanding experience and that confuse me a lot !
I hope you can enlight me with your experience and share what you already know with empathy and honesty ,
Hello, @me5
Hope you’re doing great!
Well, I can speak from my experience: you don’t necessarily need a Degree in translation to find work, but you do need experience (TWB counts as experience) so that you can deliver translations of good quality ! As for the examinations, if you have the resources to get a qualification definitely go for it! If not, you can maybe try a free way to test you knowledge, for exemple, here is a free proficiency test I took a couple of weeks ago:
I hope this helps you build your portfolio, so that outsources acknowledge your skills!
Regarding a certificate, some outsources do require either an academic translation certificate or a certificate from another field + 2 or 3 years of translation experience or around 5 years of experience. But don’t worry lots and lots of outsources require only 2 or 3 years of experience in general!!!. My final advice is to open a Proz.com account online (if you don’t already have one) so that you can find some work in your language pairs.
Wish you the best of luck and hope that I’ve been of service! :
oh you are being very sweet! hoping for more honest replies like yours! YEAH ITHINK IT IS IMPORTANT TO BE HONEST ABOUT THIS KIND OF TOPICS AFTER ALL WITHOUT NERWORKING OR COMMUNITIES WE WILL NOT GO THAT FAR
i often see trasnlators from different backgrounds , some have the full/45 year degreee others just have the experience so it brings me curiosity to know the true I THINK IT IS IMPORTANT
